01 / The basics

What is circadian rhythm?

It's the roughly 24-hour clock every living thing runs on. In us, a master clock sits deep in the brain (in a spot called the SCN) and reads one main signal all day long: light. Bright light says daytime. Darkness says night.

That clock doesn't just decide when you feel sleepy. It sets the timing for body temperature, hormones like cortisol and melatonin, digestion, and cell repair. Everything in you has a preferred hour.

Light in → clock set → the whole body gets its schedule.

02 / In your skin

Your skin keeps its own time

Your skin keeps its own time

Here's the part most routines miss: the brain clock isn't the only one. Nearly every cell keeps time too, including the ones in your skin. Keratinocytes, fibroblasts and melanocytes each carry their own tiny timer, run by clock genes with names like BMAL1 and PER1.

These skin clocks read light, temperature and stress, then adjust what the skin does. It's why your face genuinely behaves differently at 8am than at midnight, and why the same product can land differently depending on the hour you use it.

Not one clock. Millions of them, all through your skin.

03 / Two shifts

Explain the timeline
(Rise → Shine → Chill → Yawn)

Once you know the schedule, the whole thing makes sense. Your skin works two shifts, and they want completely different things. That's why Oteria Skincare, a premium skincare brand India, creates routines that work with your skin's natural rhythm instead of against it.

Day · Protect

Morning Rise

  • Barrier at its strongest
  • UV sensitivity begins to rise
  • Best hours for antioxidants + SPF

Afternoon Shine

  • Sebum peaks early-to-mid afternoon
  • Skin faces high temperatures, pollution and dehydration
  • Lightweight hydration helps replenish moisture and support the skin barrier

Night · Repair

Evening Chill

  • Skin begins transitioning into repair mode
  • Permeability increases, making it easier for calming ingredients to absorb
  • Best hours to soothe, hydrate and prepare skin for overnight renewal

Night Yawn

  • Cell turnover peaks 11pm–4am
  • Collagen and renewal ramp up
  • Water loss rises, so hydration matters
  • Best hours for retinol + peptides for anti-aging skincare and age-defying skincare

Mitosis peak per Journal of Investigative Dermatology

Push against this, and it shows. Late nights and screen light after dark keep skin stuck on the day shift, so the rebuilding starts late or gets skipped. Over time, this can lead to dullness, a weaker barrier and slower healing. Supporting your skin through every phase from Rise and Shine to Chill and Yawn is the foundation of circadian skincare, helping your skin protect by day and repair by night.

04 / The case for timing

A routine that fits the clock beats a bigger routine

You don't need twelve steps. You need the right few at the right hours. An antioxidant does more before the sun's out. Retinol does more once your cells hit their overnight turnover peak. Same actives, better timing, more result.

That matters even more for Indian skin, which mostly falls in Fitzpatrick types III to V. More melanin means better natural UV cover, but also a stronger tendency toward pigmentation and post-inflammatory marks. Steady, well-timed care handles that better than piling on stronger products.

Fewer steps. Better hours. That's the whole idea behind Rise, Shine, Chill and Yawn.

Rise · morning

Cleanse · antioxidant · SPF

Shine · midday

Afternoon · hydration

Chill · evening

Regenerate · calm · soothe

Yawn · night

Retinol · peptides · rich repair

08 / Hero ingredients

Ten actives, each with a preferred hour

We chose ingredients for when they work hardest, then put them into the phase that matches. Same chemistry. Better clock.

White Tea Extract

01

White Tea Extract

Their signature antioxidant, picked young for a heavier dose of polyphenols. Neutralises free radicals and eases inflammation.

Rise

In White Tea Face Wash

Niacinamide

02

Niacinamide

Vitamin B3. Strengthens the barrier, balances pH and keeps oil in check. The barrier is what falters when your rhythm slips.

Rise

In White Tea Face Wash

Horse Chestnut Seed

03

Horse Chestnut Seed

Aesculus Hippocastanum. Boosts microcirculation and calms redness, which is exactly what puffy morning skin needs.

Rise

In Go-To Skin Cream

Kiwi Fruit Cells

04

Kiwi Fruit Cells

Vitamin-C-rich and antioxidant. Formulated to push back on blue light and digital pollution during screen-heavy afternoons.

Shine

In Radiant Kiwi Mist

Vitamins A, E & B

05

Vitamins A, E & B

A multivitamin blend for antioxidant cover through the day and quiet nourishment for the barrier overnight.

Rise

In Go-To Skin Cream

Ashwagandha

06

Ashwagandha

An adaptogen that dials down stress signals. Cortisol runs on its own clock, and calming it helps the evening wind-down.

Shine

In Radiant Kiwi Mist

Aloe Vera

07

Aloe Vera

Soothes, hydrates and calms redness after a full day of sun, heat and pollution. Gentle enough for a nightly cleanse.

Shine

In Aloe Hydrating Face Wash

Hyaluronic Acid

08

Hyaluronic Acid

A humectant that pulls in moisture and binds it to the skin. Water loss climbs at night, so this earns its place after dark.

Yawn

In Bounce Back Cream

Encapsulated Retinol

09

Encapsulated Retinol

Drives collagen and cell turnover. The encapsulation releases it slowly through the night, riding the 11pm–4am turnover peak with less sting. A key choice for anti-aging skincare, encapsulated retinol supports overnight renewal and is ideal for those exploring age-defying skincare routines.

Yawn

In Bounce Back Cream

Polypeptides

10

Polypeptides

Short chains that signal repair and firming, plus a de-puffing hit for the eye area. Best used while the skin is in repair mode.

Yawn

In Time Travel Eye Serum
